ÛÛ She is actress Zooey Deschanel, Him is alt-singer/ ÛÛ
ÛÛ songwriter M. Ward. The two met on the set of a movie, ÛÛ
ÛÛ found some musical common ground, and began working ÛÛ
ÛÛ together. Volume One is the resulting album and it's one ÛÛ
ÛÛ of the better albums made recently by a movie star, male ÛÛ
ÛÛ or female. Good enough that it even heads off the ÛÛ
ÛÛ obligatory suspicions that she only got to make a record ÛÛ
ÛÛ because she was a Hollywood star. After a few spins of ÛÛ
ÛÛ the album one could make a compelling case that Deschanel ÛÛ
ÛÛ could quit her day job, or at least justifiably call ÛÛ
ÛÛ herself an actress/musician. The common ground that the ÛÛ
ÛÛ duo found and explore on Volume One is a sweet place ÛÛ
ÛÛ where light-'60s pop meets strummy country tunes and ÛÛ
ÛÛ candy-coated folk, a mythical meeting place between ÛÛ
ÛÛ Sandie Shaw and Tammy Wynette with cameos by Richard & ÛÛ
ÛÛ Linda Thompson. Deschanel's songs are simple and sad ÛÛ
ÛÛ tales of heartbreak and missed connections, with hooky ÛÛ
ÛÛ melodies and not a single artless moment to be found. For ÛÛ
ÛÛ sure there's not a single instance that sounds like she ÛÛ
ÛÛ got the gig because of who she is, instead of what she ÛÛ
ÛÛ can do. Even if her songs were weak, her strong, assured ÛÛ
ÛÛ vocals would carry the day. Sweet and rich with no ÛÛ
ÛÛ annoying folky warble, she can croon ("Take It Back"), ÛÛ
ÛÛ cry ("Sentimental Heart"), be playful (the bubblegum ÛÛ
ÛÛ snappy "I Was Made For You"), or just sweep you off your ÛÛ
ÛÛ feet with sweetness ("Sweet Darlin'", which she co-wrote ÛÛ
ÛÛ with another artist who overcomes his Hollywood roots, ÛÛ
ÛÛ Jason Schwartzman). As for Ward, he keeps his quirks ÛÛ
ÛÛ mostly to himself, providing sympathetic backing ÛÛ
ÛÛ unadorned by the kind of tricks and gimmicks that make ÛÛ
ÛÛ his own albums slightly uneven. The occasional whistle ÛÛ
ÛÛ here or slightly unconventional string arrangement there ÛÛ
ÛÛ are the only traces of his usual artistry on Volume One. ÛÛ
ÛÛ The rest of the time he and the band (which includes the ÛÛ
ÛÛ ubiquitous Mike Mogis) create a soft, gentle feel equally ÛÛ
ÛÛ inspired by the Brill Building and the Countrypolitan ÛÛ
ÛÛ sound of Nashville in the late '50s. The only place the ÛÛ
ÛÛ album falters is on the two covers the duo attempt. ÛÛ
ÛÛ Deschanel doesn't add much to "You Really Got A Hold On ÛÛ
ÛÛ Me", and Ward's backing vocals are just the kind of ÛÛ
ÛÛ affected, arch singing she avoids elsewhere. Their take ÛÛ
ÛÛ on the Beatles' "I Should Have Known Better" is better ÛÛ
ÛÛ but still awfully close to a novelty. The album would ÛÛ
ÛÛ have been more successful without both tracks, but even ÛÛ
ÛÛ with them it stands as a nice coming out party for ÛÛ
ÛÛ Deschanel. If you run screaming at the thought of singing ÛÛ
ÛÛ actresses, give She & Him a chance and they might calm ÛÛ
ÛÛ your fears. You may even forget the origins of the singer ÛÛ
ÛÛ and simply be charmed by the singing, the songs, and the ÛÛ
ÛÛ sounds found on Volume One. ÛÛ
